Equalizing the state and charge of two series connected batteries

Overview

If one leisure battery in a series of batteries has a higher internal leakage current then this can cause that battery or others within the series to become undercharged. All batteries within a series should have the same initial rate of charge any large differences will mean that damage to the batteries will occur due to what is called excessive gassing.

Battery Balancing

By equalizing the state of charge within a series of batteries the Victron energy battery balancer compares the voltage over a series of connected batteries. When a 24v battery reaches a charge voltage of 27.3v the battery balancer will turn on and compare the voltage between all batteries within the series and then begin drawing a current of up to 0.7A from the battery within the series which has the highest voltage.
